Elation offers the functionality to send controlled substance medication scripts to pharmacies for providers who wish to use this feature. Learn more about the electronic prescribing of controlled substance (ECPS) feature in this article:

If you wish to print your controlled substance scripts from Elation, you must make sure the script is printed on compatible and secure Laser triplicate paper in order for pharmacies to accept the script.
We recommend purchasing secure prescription paper that works with Elation to easily order and document controlled substance medications for your patients from the patient's chart in Elation.
You will need to order special controlled substance paper from
American Security RX to use with Elation if your practice is in California:
- Fill out this Controlled Substance Order Form- California order form and email the documents to Morgan Danielson at American Security RX (asrx@americansecurityrx.com).
- Under the Please select California Security Rx Form, Size, Format, and Quantity section on page 2, choose the option for "Lasers (L110)".
- Once American Security RX has completed a proof for you, please notify Elation using the "I need help" >> "I need help from an Elation Team Member" button at the top of your account. A member of the Elation Team will collect the proof from you and then verify that the printout works correctly. Afterwards, you can order the printing paper.
If your practice is in any other state besides California, you can use regular (8.5" x 11") Laser controlled substance paper for your state. You may also order from
American Security Rx if needed:
- Fill out this Controlled Substance Order Form- Laser order form and email the documents to Morgan Danielson at American Security RX (asrx@americansecurityrx.com).
- Select the "Laser (8.5" x 11")" option to use the paper with Elation
Once your secure prescription paper arrives, you must use the Prescription Form in Elation to print your controlled substance medication scripts. The Prescription Form printout will match the layout of your secure prescription paper.
Each controlled substance script can only be printed within 10 minutes of the script being signed (this is in case you run into printer issues). After 10 minutes, if you try to print the script again, a watermark will be printed over the script per DEA regulations and you can only print a non-fillable copy. If a new script needs to be printed, you must mark the old script as cancelled and order the medication again.
- DEA regulations state that each controlled substance script can only be printed once in order to prevent patients from being able to obtain multiple fills with a single printed script.
Is there any other way to order controlled substance medications in Elation?
If your state permits, you can continue using a paper prescription pad or call the pharmacy directly to order controlled substance medication scripts. After an order is placed, we recommend using the Document Meds Pt is On form to document that you have prescribed a controlled substance medication for the patient in the patient's chart.
