What is EPCS?

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) revised its regulations to include electronic prescribing for controlled substances (EPCS) in 2010. It provides prescribers the option to electronically prescribe controlled substance, while also permitting pharmacies to receive, dispense and archive them.

EPCS requires that prescribers confirm their identity and status through identity proofing before they can write electronic prescriptions to ensure. Once approved, prescribers must complete two step authentication for each prescription they send to ensure no one else uses their credentials.

Why is EPCS valuable?

The EPCS regulation was introduced as a way to combat the high rates of drug abuse, diversion and deaths related to controlled substance mis-use in America by making it more difficult for for drug-seekers to doctor-shop and alter prescriptions. Currently 78 Americans die from drug overdoses every day, of which more than half are attributed to prescription opioids. This number that has nearly quadrupled since 1999.

A standardized electronic experience that requires identity proofing and 2 step authentication by the prescriber reduces the potential for forgery, theft and misunderstood handwriting. It also eliminates the need for specialized paper (required by some states) and creates direct alignment between prescription records and other medical records.

When is EPCS required?

EPCS is an optional feature unless your State regulations require you to electronically prescribe controlled substances (ex. New York or Maine). **If you wish to use EPCS, this feature may have additional costs associated with it.**

You can always print controlled substance medication scripts from your Elation account unless unless your State regulations require you to electronically prescribe controlled substances.
