What is eOrdering with LabCorp?

Elation has partnered with LabCorp to provide you with the ability to generate lab orders from any patient's chart in Elation and send the lab orders directly from the chart to LabCorp with the click of a button. You can also create custom order sets from LabCorp's lab test database (compendium) and receive electronic results for completed orders.

Requesting a LabCorp interface

To request a Labcorp interface, email implementation@elationhealth.com with the following information:
  1. Your Labcorp lab account number
  2. The full name of your lab representative for Labcorp
  3. The email address of your lab representative for Labcorp
Elation will notify you once the lab interface is live. If you need to send lab orders to any lab vendors prior to the bidirectional interface being live, follow the instructions in this article to fax the lab order to the lab vendor via Elation.

Managing order sets

The Lab Orders settings page contains:
  • Lab Order Settings for default lab vendor, bill type and test sorting
  • custom Lab Order Sets created for any lab vendor with eOrdering, such as LabCorp, as well as Lab Order Sets for manual lab requisitions for regular lab vendors.
You will be able to add, edit or remove order sets for LabCorp from this page.

For electronic ordering with LabCorp, when you are creating a Lab Order Set under the LabCorp e-ordering section, we will return matching search results from LabCorp's compendium database.
  • Important Note: Due to the nature of structured order compendiums, you will only be able to select from LabCorp's compendium database and will not be able to create or select lab tests created by your practice.

Required patient demographics details

LabCorp requires specific information to be sent along with electronic lab Orders, so we’ve made a couple notable additions to the Patient Demographics section.
  1. Address (full)- All LabCorp electronic orders require the patient's full address
  2. Guarantor- LabCorp requires that every electronic order that is billed to a patient or insurance must have guarantor information. Click the "+ add Guarantor" button in the demographics to add guarantor information
  3. Insurance Information- LabCorp requires that every electronic order that is billed to an insurance must have the following insurance details. Review the Patient Demographics Guide- Managing patient insurance article for additional instructions on how to manage patient insurance in Elation.
    • Insurance Name
    • Insurance Address
    • Insurance City
    • Insurance State
    • Insurance Zip
    • Group ID
    • Member ID
  4. Coverage type-  coverage is associated with the patient's insurance. You can select between Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and Worker’s Compensation from the “Coverage” box.

LabCorp Order Form overview

To create an electronic lab order for LabCorp, click on "Orders" >> "Lab Order" at the top of the patient's chart.

Lab vendor & site

You do not need to add or select specific LabCorp locations (e.g. "LabCorp San Francisco, 123 Street") to successfully send a LabCorp order or for patients to complete the order. All LabCorp locations will have the order on file.

In-house lab draws

If your practice collects specimens in-house, select the 'In-House-Draw' option on the 'Any Site' menu in the lab requisition form. Use the 'Collection Date' and 'Collection Time' fields to enter relevant information for the electronic order and/or requisition printout.

Tests

LabCorp electronic ordering in Elation uses the LabCorp compendium database for test selection. The database is supplied and maintained by LabCorp and is updated on a monthly basis. You will not be able to create your own tests or select previously created lab tests from your database.
  • User Tip: If you cannot find a test in the test search, we recommend trying to search for the test using different terms (ex. the Complete Metabolic Panel is known as "CMP" for LabCorp). If you have a question about a specific test or test code, please contact your LabCorp representative for assistance. Custom LabCorp codes are not supported at this time.

Additionally, we support LabCorp’s order compendium Ask at Order Entry (AOE) questions. For certain tests, the lab requires answers to questions in order to effectively process testing on a specimen. If you select a test that contains AOE questions, we will automatically see the appropriate questions and answer formats for the selected test(s). You are not required to answer the AOE questions, but please note that if you leave the questions unanswered, LabCorp will likely contact you to confirm the missing details.

You can remove tests by hovering your mouse over the line item and clicking the "X" button at any time.

Diagnoses

The Dx field will auto-populate if an order set with associated diagnosis codes is selected, or you can utilize our search function by typing out the name of the problem or diagnosis and selecting from the returned results.
  • User Tip: If the patient has problems with associated diagnosis codes in the patient's Problem List, those codes will automatically appear in the dropdown for you to select. Use the Problem List Guide to learn more about this feature.

You can remove diagnoses by hovering your mouse over the line item and clicking the "X" button at any time.

Bill Type

You can select the patient's method for billing in the Bill Type field on the lab order form. The dropdown shows LabCorp’s required selection options. Depending on the selected Bill Type, Elation will send associated details in the electronic order to LabCorp. These may include insurance or guarantor information.

If Third Party (e.g. Insurance) is selected for a patient’s Bill Type, you will notice a blue “Check Medicare Eligibility” button appear. This link will show up any time Third Party (e.g. Insurance) is selected, regardless of whether or not the patient chart has Medicare insurance on file.

If you click the “Check Medicare Eligibility” button, Elation will run a quick check with LabCorp’s Advanced Beneficiary Notice service to see if the patient has Medicare Coverage for the lab tests and diagnosis(es) selected in the order. If the patient is not covered, we will display the estimated cost for the tests and generate a printable Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) form.

Sending the order electronically to LabCorp

You will have the option to either send the order electronically to LabCorp or print the lab requisition and hand it directly to the patient.

Important Note: If a warning box surfaces stating "LabCorp requires additional insurance information to eOrder", you are missing one or more of the required insurance fields and will not have the ability to eOrder - you will only be given the option to "Print & Close". To eliminate the warning box and enable eOrdering for that patient, click the "Add" link on the right side of the warning and enter in the missing information, as demonstrated in the GIF below. The required insurance fields are as follows:
  • Insurance Name
  • Insurance Address
  • Insurance City
  • Insurance State
  • Insurance Zip
  • Group ID
  • Member ID
Once the information has been added, the warning box will disappear and you will have the option to "eOrder" or "eOrder & Print" again.

Printing requisitions and specimen labels

The requisition form can be printed directly from the chronological timeline, or from the Lab Reports view.

  • To print from the chronological timeline, hover over the lab order, click "Actions" >> "Print" or "Print Specimen Labels”.
  • To print from the Reports tab, select the desired lab order, then click "Actions" >> "Print" or "Print Specimen Labels”.

The specimen labels will appear at the bottom of the requisition form and can be used with label printer paper. Below is a sample of what your printed LabCorp orders will look like.

Reordering, changing, and canceling electronic orders

Previous lab orders can be easily re-ordered by hovering over the order from the chronological record or from the Reports tab and clicking “Actions”, then “Reorder”.

  • User Tip: If the order has already been sent to LabCorp and you would like to change or cancel the order, please contact LabCorp to make these changes.

Receiving LabCorp test results

Once a patient completes a lab order and the results are finalized, LabCorp will send you the test results directly through Elation. For more information about receiving electronic test results, see the Lab Reports- Viewing results from lab interfaces article.

Close-the-loop feature

Being aware of outstanding orders is vital to prioritizing patient outreach efforts and informing future care plans, which is why we have incorporated an optional set of features that will help your practice keep track of outstanding orders. Learn more about the Close-the-Loop experience and how to request access in the Orders Guide- Following up on outstanding lab, radiology or other orders article.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can I create a lab order for patients without insurance?

  • If you choose "Patient" as the Bill Type then you do not have to enter insurance information for the patient. The patient would then be expected to pay at the lab center.

Why can't find a LabCorp test that I have ordered before?

The directory of all tests available (compendium), is supplied and maintained by LabCorp. Elation EHR updates our LabCorp compendium on a monthly basis. We recommend trying to search for the test using different terms (ex. the Complete Metabolic Panel is known as "CMP" for LabCorp)

If you have a question about a specific test or test code, please contact your LabCorp representative for assistance. Custom LabCorp codes are not supported at this time.

What do the different Bill Types mean?

  • Third Party= Bill the Patient's insurance information on file
  • Patient= Bill the Patient directly
  • Client= Bill my practice
  • Worker's Comp= Bill the patient's worker's compensation payer
  • Special Billing= Allows you to designate that you have some kind of special discount code or code that you would like to associate with this order. Add the code to the Lab Instr field

Why can't I see or select my existing Order Sets?

LabCorp requires you to use tests (compendium) from their database. You cannot use your old order sets because those tests are not tied to the LabCorp compendium. You must create new order sets for LabCorp eOrdering.
