What are Report Categories?

When you file a document into a patient chart in Elation, you must assign a document type to the document. The document type corresponds to a Report Category in the patient's chart and is a way for you to categorize that report and group it with similar repots within the patient's chart. In Elation’s Settings, you can choose from over 60 different Report Categories to use in your practice. You can customize your set of Report Categories to make Elation best fit the needs of your practice.

Report Category settings

For Admins Only
To edit Report Categories in your Elation settings, you must have Admin level privileges. To become an Admin, you must ask for an existing Admin at your practice (most likely a primary physician account holder) to grant you privileges via Manage Accounts section of their Elation settings.

To adjust the Report Categories that appear in your practice, go to "Settings" >> "Report & Visit Note Categories"

On this page, you’ll see a list of the existing Report Categories available for your practice. With the exception of the Laboratory, Imaging, and Consultation categories, you are free to remove any category in the list and/or add new categories.

Adding a new Report Category

Important Notes:
  • The Medical Forms category is designed for to the Patient Forms feature in Elation only. Any documents file under Medical Forms will only appear in the Outstanding Items section of the patient's chart. We recommend using the Clinical Form, Intake Form, or Patient Consent categories to store patient paperwork for your office.
  • If you add the Pulmonary or Sleep category to your list, all pulmonary orders or sleep orders will move under the respective sections of the Reports section in patient charts.

Removing a Report Category

  1. Find the Report Category that you wish to remove in the Report Category list
  2. Click the “delete” button next to the category

Important Notes:
  • The Laboratory, Imaging, and Consultation categories cannot be removed.
  • If you remove the Pulmonary or Sleep categories and have previously ordered pulmonary or sleep tests, those orders will move under the Consultation Reports section of the patient's chart.

Changing the order of Report Categories

On the Report & Visit Note Categories settings page, near the top, you will see a preview of the tab order that shows up in your Reports window in each patient chart. You can fit as many as 8 Report Categories on each page of your Reports window:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What happens if I delete a Report Category that still has reports associated within it?

The deleted Report category will continue to exist in any chart that has a report previously filed as that report category. However, you will no longer be able to file new reports to that category and the tab will not appear in any charts that do not have any reports of that category.

For example, if you were to delete the "Hospital" report category, any charts with Hospital Reports will continue to keep that category but the category will disappear from any charts that do not have Hospital Reports. The Hospital Report category will also jump to the end of the list by default for any charts with old Hospital Reports. Your practice can decide whether to choose to re-categorize old Hospital Reports or keep them in that category.

What should I do if I cannot find the Report Category I want?

We surveyed the community and spent time developing the list of Report Categories available to best accommodate the needs of all of the different providers and practices using Elation. If you ca not find a specific Report Category, we recommend that you try scrolling through the list to find an analogous type. While you cannot freely create new Report Categories, if you feel strongly that there is no option to address your need, please let us know through the “I need help” button and our Support Team will be happy to relay this information to our Product Team.
